French Marigold
Tagetes patula
Uses: Culinary Duration: Annual
When to Sow: Spring Ease of Germination: Easy
One of the easiest and cheerful annuals to grow, adorning the garden with fiery orange and maroon blossoms that attract bees, hummingbirds and butterflies all summer long! This particular variety is more compact with smaller blossoms and the preferred variety of marigold for insect control, especially when interplanted among vegetable gardens. The roots emit a chemical that is effective at repelling parasitic worms, especially the root-knot and lesion nematodes that most commonly impact tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, snap beans, squash, onions and garlic. Prefers full sun and well drained moist soil; can be sown anytime throughout the summer. Looks great in beds, borders, edges and pots. Pinch off the tops to encourage bushier growth. Height 0.5-1 ft.
