Mullein
Verbascum thapsus
Uses: Medicinal
Lofty stalks decorated with bright yellow dye containing flowers. Its name comes from a Latin word meaning soft; you will understand why when you touch the leaves! Commonly seen growing in disturbed soils, along roadsides and railway tracks. Mullein has a long history as a remedy for respiratory conditions such as asthma and infections. It is especially beneficial when used as a tea; either the bitter leaf or sweet flower. Its mucilage helps to soothe irritated mucus membranes by forming a protective layer over top. It also has expectorant properties which is helpful to clear coughs. The leaves were smoked by Native Americans and early American settlers to help relieve chest complains. Leaves can be used topically as a vulnerary and antibacterial agent to treat scrapes. You can do this by making an oil infusion with the flowers. Ht 4-12ft; spread 2ft.
