Indian Long Pepper
Piper nigrum
Uses: Culinary/Medicinal
(Jaborandi pepper; Pippali) This is a spice closely related to black pepper but not well known in the West. For all of our lazy but pervasive use of black pepper on just about everything, we would do well to consider trying something different like this. The taste is similar to black pepper but hotter and a bit sweeter. The spice has been used in India, Indonesia and Africa for centuries and was widely used by the ancient Greeks and Romans. In Indian Ayurvedic medicine, long pepper is important in Trikatu, a remedy used to increase digestive fire or agni by promoting more efficient digestion, detoxification, and fat metabolism. Long pepper contains a compound called piperlongumine that has been shown to selectively kill cancer cells without harming normal cells.
