(Aka-shisho) Decorative herb reminiscent of coleus. Cinnamon-scented leaves are used in Japan to give a scarlet colour to pickled plums (umeboshi) and preserved ginger (beni shoga). Before sowing, soak seeds in water for 24 hours. Purplish red leaves; preferred variety for pickling.
