The variety name "Misaki" got us wondering: was it inspired by a famous fishing port of the same name near Tokyo where undoubtedly this herb is celebrated for its quintessential affinity for fish? Or was it a nod to the divine spirits known as misaki who appear as good omens and guide the gods according to traditional Japanese belief? Either way, this is a very nice Japanese shiso with large indented leaves, reseda green on top and mauve beneath. The flavour is classic shiso, perfect for raw fish, tofu, pickles and tempura.
