Hoary Puccoon
Lithospermum canescens
Uses: Medicinal
The plant is covered with fine white hairs, giving it a silvered or “hoary” appearance. Puccoon is from an Algonquin word poughkone meaning dye plant. Hoary puccoon was used by native North Americans to paint their faces for ceremonial purposes. For dyecraft, the dried and chopped taproot yields a dark reddish dye that can range to purple, depending on where the plant was grown.
