Belongs to a group referred to as brambles, which has been documented as far back as the ancient times, referred to by the Greeks and Romans, as well as playing an important role in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine where all parts were used as food and medicine. Leaves are appreciated for its benefit when used over the course of pregnancy as a uterine tonic, to prepare the body for labour. Controls contractions while minimizing blood loss. Tannin content gives it astringent properties which make it useful for treating diarrhea and leukorrhea.
