Silver Sage
Salvia argentea
Uses: Medicinal Duration: Biennial or Perennial (hardy in zones 5-8)
When to Sow: Anytime Ease of Germination: Easy
Beautiful sage from southern Europe with giant silver-gray woolly leaves. Excellent sage for the silver or grey garden. The leaves have a mild fruity aroma but they are not used in cooking or for scent. In Lucania, in southern Italy, the young leaves are traditionally collected during the procession of the Black Madonna in May and September and are dried for future use to treat wounds, much like bandages. The tall silvery white flower spikes are attractive, but they should be cut back immediately after flowering otherwise plants may not come back the next season. Prefers dry, sunny areas with excellent drainage.
