One of several varieties of santonica from the vast steppes of central Asia. The small grey-green shrub, rising up to 30cm/12" high, is aromatic and bitter, and is used as an anthelmintic, stimulant and emmenagogue. Santonica was introduced to Europe from the Middle East by returning Crusaders, and for centuries the herb was used for the treatment of worms.
