(Wireweed; Broomweed) This native of Central America has travelled throughout the tropical and subtropical world wherever humans have migrated. It is best known as a medicine for fever and headache, but it is also used for colds, asthma, infections, ulcer, malaria, diarrhea, dysentery, and skin diseases. Many of its properties and uses have been confirmed by research. It is a potent analgesic and anti-inflammatory, and has proven antimicrobial, antioxidant and hepatoprotective properties. It also has sedative and anti-anxiety properties, and animal studies show that it can settle nerves and improve sleep. A major alkaloid found in this plant is cryptolepine, a compound with potent antimalarial and antibacterial properties. Because the plant is so valuable as a medicine there is a rich lore associated with it as an agent of spiritual strength and protection. It is claimed to protect from witchcraft, evil spirits and insanity, from motor accidents and sharp instruments, and even courtroom adversaries. Although the plant is tropical it grows as an annual in temperate gardens. Start early indoors and transplant to the garden in spring. Thrives in full sun and in most soils. Ht. 30-90cm (1-3ft).
