Dipteryx odorata
Uses: Medicinal
The sweet, dark scent reminiscent of almonds, vanilla and dates has historically made this South American bean a popular addition to everything from tobacco to perfume. Native to the Orinoco region, the beans come from trees that can live over 1,000 years. Beans can be opened to reveal small crystals, a potent source of the chemical coumarin used to produce warfarin. Its use in food has been banned in many countries for this reason. Tonka’s real and best use continues to be its role in perfume manufacture. Add it to perfumes, soaps and sachets to enjoy its extraordinary scent.
