| Vetiver Grass |
| Vetiveria zizanioides 'Sunshine'|
| Uses: Aromatic/Industrial
|| Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 9-10) |
Coarse grass native to India. Sweet scented roots widely used to make woven handicrafts. Distilled oil described as woodsy and earthy is used in oriental fragrances. Oil repels flies, cockroaches, lice, and bedbugs. Promoted worldwide as an erosion control plant. With roots penetrating as deep as 3 m, vetiver withstands drought easily and is not easily disloged by erosion. In as little as 20 years, vetiver hedges have been known to transform deserts into mature forests. Non-flowering strain; safe to use as erosion control. Hardy to -10°C; proven hardy in southern B.C.
