Powis Castle Wormwood
Artemisia 'Powis Castle'
Uses: Medicinal/Aromatic Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 6-9)
Outstanding ornamental artemisia that grows in bushy dense mounds of lacy silver foliage. Its striking colour and shape makes it one of the most useful artemisias for landscaping! Foliage has a mild camphor fragrance. In rare cases it produces yellow flowers in late summer or early fall but should be cut to keep the foliage producing optimally. Introduced from the National Trust’s Powis Castle in Wales in 1972. Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society in 1993. No one is sure of its origin but it is presumed to be a hybrid between common wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) and a North African species known as tree wormwood (Artemisia arborescens). That being said, it is more tolerant to hot conditions when compared to other artemisia varieties. This parentage, if true, may explain why Powis Castle is not quite as hardy as other artemisias. Thrives in poor dry soils, although can tolerate fertile moderately moist conditions. Plant in full sun. Height 2-3 feet.
