Annatto

The seed of this Brazilian native shrub is one of the most popular sources of yellow dye worldwide, with a history of use in textile, paint and cosmetic industries. Was the original Amerindian warpaint. In fact, with the increasing safety concern and banning of synthetic dyes in food products, the industry has looked to the annatto seed as an alternative, now comprising about 70% of all natural colouring agents consumed worldwide! Dye is used in butter, margarine, cheese and many other food products.
