One of the most under-appreciated healing plants of the world. Growing research interest is showing how amazing this plant really is. The First Nations people know this herb as a suitable topical application for bruises, boils and to "draw out" infections as well as brewed as a tea for intestinal parasites. Today it is a clinically proven anti-inflammatory, more effective than cortisone cream for redness and irritation of the skin. It has analgesic, antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiviral properties, as well as potent anti-aging properties. Of the more than 100 bioactive compounds found in fireweed research has focused on a compound called oenothein B present at high levels in fireweed. This compound is an antioxidant and has potent immune modulatory effects, and has promise for prostate cancer and tumours. Fireweed is also a healer of mother nature, helping to begin the process of regeneration by moving in quickly after forest fires and clear-cutting. And to top of all this, fireweed is stunningly beautiful with masses of pink flowers appearing from June to September. Seeds require light and cold to germinate: surface sow with a very light covering and expose to cold temperatures (5C/40F) for at least 2 months; then move room temperature. Or sow in fall outdoors to come up in spring.
