When this heirloom corn was introduced by W. Atlee Burpee in 1902, it sparked a revolution in the gardens of America. It was the first yellow sweet corn in an era when white corn was the accepted dinner table standard and yellow corns were fed only to livestock. Within a few years people clamoured for the little golden-yellow corn with the big taste. It is still the best tasting corn available. As one devotee describes it, "each chewy kernel is packed with sweet, rich, old-fashioned corn flavour." We agree! The newer supersweet varieties may be sweeter but that sugary sweetness comes with not much else -- just empty calories. Super hardy, it can be planted early while soils are still cold, and can be sown repeatedly to midsummer for staggered harvests from late summer until first frost. Ideal for small gardens as its small 5ft (1.5m) stature allows closer spacing and bigger yields. Best eaten or cooked fresh straight from the garden. 80 days.
