This stunning heirloom looks as though it was painted by an impressionist master in brushstrokes of deep purple. It comes from the area near the Spanish city of Gandía, on the Mediterranean coast. It is known for its excellent flavour, tenderness, and its thin skin that does not need peeling. Fruits are about 15cm (6") long, and they keep coming even in drought and heat. Try them sauteed, roasted or baked like other eggplants, or grilled with goat cheese and mojama dry-cured tuna. 70-80 days.
