Feline Cystitis

I currently have a ten year old male cat who has chronic idopathic cystitis and wonder if couch grass would clean this up. We have had drugs from vet which work but then it reoccurs and so far with natural herbs goldenseal and one with combined stuff from Pet Smart I haven’t solved his peeing on the floor. I guess I would like to know a natural antinflammory as well as if couch grass would work.

Given that this condition has been going on for some time, I would urge you to seek out a qualified herbal practitioner who works with cats to work with you on getting your cat back to health. In the meantime, I would suggest that you get your cat onto a good homemade diet (see books by Richard Pitcairn, "Natural Health for Dogs and Cats", "The Complete Herbal Handbook for the Dog and Cat" by Juliette de Bairacli Levy and "The Barf Diet" by Ian Billinghurst). Feed your cat twice a day only and do not free feed. Add a 250 mg crushed Vitamin C (buffered form) tablet to your cat’s food twice a day to help acidify the urine. Couch Grass (Agropyron repens) is a great herb to soothe and relax the urinary tract but at this point, I would suggest that your cat needs more specific attention. In addition, please look to see that your cat’s litter box is kept very clean and that he doesn’t have to share it with other cats. I would also ask you to look at whether there is another reason your cat might be urinating outside his box. Sometimes when a cat is unhappy or stressed, they can often use other methods to get their message across.
