Dog and Eye inflammation

I have a small mixed breed dog who is 11 years old. About a week ago, I noticed his left eye had some mucus in the lower part and it was light sensitive. I tried to wipe it with a warm cloth and he yelped so I didn’t do it any more until this morning (1 week later). I have started him on echinacea and goldenseal liquid in his food, 4-6 drops 4x a day with 1/2 baby aspirin 2x a day for pain. lt is not any worse but it doesn’t seem to be much better either. There isn’t any swelling that I can see now. His other eye is alright and his appetite is good and I do take him walking around outside for exercise. Can you help me or recommend something else?

It is difficult to say what to do as there are many reasons your dog could have developed this condition. The best thing would be to have him seen by a veterinarian to determine exactly what the problem is and whether any damage has occurred to the eye itself. Given that he yelped when you tried to touch the area, it sounds as though he has something caught in his eye which could hurt the cornea and cause possible permanent damage or scarring. Therefore, a veterinarian may have to remove whatever the offending object is whilst your dog is under sedation. In the meantime, the Echinacea and Goldenseal treatment you’ve been using is great, but he really needs to be seen by a veterinarian.
