I have a Scottish Terrier who will be 1 yr old on March 1st and we noticed that he had an almost a bald spot on his right inside hind leg. We took him to the vet who said it could possibly be an allergic reaction to his food and she gave use medicine ( VANECTYL-P ). We were to change his food to a non beef and non chicken based food, which we did. He completed his course and was only on every other day until it looked like it wasn’t bothering him again, and then only when needed. It worked until this morning when he was nibbling on his hind leg again. It obviously wasn’t his food. I also have a 7 yr old Scottish Terrier who has no signs of this allergy. Is there anything natural that would help as I am not a big supported of giving this type of drug long term.

Even though your other dog is not displaying any allergic symptoms, each animal even within the same household, must be treated as an individual entity, each with its own specific health history. Please see the entry "Dog and Allergies" on this website (www.richters.com) for previously posted information on this condition. Although you mention that the original food was replaced by another non-beef, non-chicken food, I am assuming both diets were commercially based. Many animals have allergies for a number of reasons to this type of diet. The books listed on the entry cited above will provide you with in-depth discussions of this topic.
