Dog and Yeast Infection

I have a chihuahua that has been plagued with ear infections for many years. She has been on almost every drug available but the yeast infection always returns. I actually do not think that the infection has ever been completely cured. I believe there is a better natural cure waiting to ease her suffering. I would appreciate any and all advice that you could offer.

Yeast infections typically show up in animals (and humans) who have diets high in sugars and who have immune systems functioning at less than optimum levels. Most commercial pet foods are loaded with carbohyrates (sugar) and low in protein (meat), so the first thing to do would be to put your dog on a good, homemade diet. Please see the posting on this website (www.richters.com) entitled "Aging Dog with Arthritis" for recipe resources. Next: as your dog has been dealing with this condition for what sounds like a long period of time, it would be best if you would take your dog to see a qualified practitioner who works with both animals and herbs. In the meantime, you may find some relief from the application of Calendula oil. Warm the oil to body temperature and put 2-3 drops in both ears twice day. Be sure to massage the oil down into the ear canal after application. I also hasten to add that this recommendation must accompany the diet change as well as a visit to a practitioner as mentioned above in order to facillitate improvement.
