My one-year old in-pin/daschund mix toy dog has some hair loss in her outer ears. The vet prescribed an ointment -- it helped but did not restore the hair fully. Can you help me on this?

Is your dog scratching at the area? Does the area appear to inflamed? I assume your vet ruled out any form of parasite. It is possible that the hair loss is linked to a food allergy of some type. A place to start might be to switch your dog over to a good, homemade diet. Useful resources for this are: Richard Pitcairn’s, "Natural Health for Dogs and Cats", "The Complete Herbal Handbook for the Dog and Cat" by Juliette de Bairacli Levy and "The Barf Diet" by Ian Billinghurst. In addition and especially if there is any tissue damage, you could consider making a strong tea of Calendula flowers at two tablespoons dried herb to one cup boiling water. Let steep, covered until lukewarm and strain. Dip a clean cotton cloth into the tea, wring and place on the affected area for as long as your dog will allow. try this two to three times a day. Calendula flowers should be available at any good health food shop.
