What would you recommend for heartworm prevention and tapeworms?

The first question here is, do you live in an area that has a heartworm infestation? If not, you shouldn’t have to worry. As for tapeworm, prevention is possible by avoiding infested prey animals (rodents, rabbits, etc), feces and fleas. Please see the posting on this website (www.richters.com) entitled, "Black Walnut and Other Herbs for Heartworm". Generally the theory is that if an animal is at it’s optimum health with a strong immune system, a parasite such as heartworm or tapeworm will be less able to infect than an animal who is weak and therefore an easily accessible host. One way to keep an animal strong and therefore have a robust immune system is to feed it a good, homemade diet. Information and recipes on this topic can be found in the works of Richard Pitcairn, "Natural Health for Dogs and Cats", "The Complete Herbal Handbook for the Dog and Cat" by Juliette de Bairacli Levy and "The Barf Diet" by Ian Billinghurst.
