Lyme Disease and Arthritis
Answered by: Kerry Hackett
Question from Jan Scanlon Coles

My dog Splash is a border collie who turned 15 in June. Her sacrum and back legs are compromised because of arthritis, and we also suspect that she has Lyme disease. She is currently on andrographis and doxycycline for the Lyme, Recovery, Lakota, white willow, devil’s claw and Selenium Plus, Moducare, bonemeal, magnesium citrate. Are there any other herbs that you know of that would benefit her?

Has she seen a veterinarian and been diagnosed with Lyme disease? If so, you need to speak with a qualified professional who has experience both with animals and herbs. This is a very complex illness and one that requires time, patience and expertise and, unfortunately the complexity of this illness is beyond the scope of this forum. However, you should be able to find a practitioner throught the website of the Veterinary Botanical Medicine Association (www.vbma.org). In addition, one of the symptoms of lyme disease is arthritis so treatment for lyme disease may have an effect on your dog’s arthritis as well.
