Dog Rubbing Chin Until Almost Raw

Our 11 year old female dog has been rubbing her chin and scratching at her gums off and on for the past few years. She has had tests and treatments of Vanectyl-P, which I think of as a quick fix, not a cure. She has had her teeth cleaned, gums checked and has been tested for infections etc. I have changed her food to holistic food, with and without meat. When she walks she never has a problem . I have tried everything I can think of but she still scratches.

Although you mention you have changed her diet to a "holistic food", you do not mention what that is. There are a number of "holistic foods" on the market which are still commercially produced and unfortunately often continue to cause the immune reaction you describe. There really is no substitute for good, homemade nutrition. Please see the work of Richard Pitcairn, "Natural Health for Dogs and Cats", "The Complete Herbal Handbook for the Dog and Cat" by Juliette de Bairacli Levy and "The Barf Diet" by Ian Billinghurst for further information and recipes. In the meantime also please see the posting on this website (www.richters.com) entitled, "Dog and Allergies".
