Puppy and Bald Spots

I recently adopted a puppy from the Humane Society (she’s was approx 4-5 weeks when adopted on 10-22-06) and I prefer to use natural herbs over anything else. She had a cough (not kennel cough) and I was wondering if there is something I can give her other than cold medication (has to be kept refrigerated) that might be able to soothe her throat?

My other question is that she just recently started to obtain a small balding patch along the lower part of the leg (by the paw). She doesn’t have ringworms, mange or anything else. I figured it to be mites or chiggers... my husband thinks it to be a nervous tick because we leave her in the kennel when we are at work. The vet gave me a spray ointment to treat it for ringworms (black light was done to check for ringworms and it came up negative). Is there something I can use to help the healing process?

I’m assuming your vet examined you new puppy for ringworm, mange or any other skin condition and the results were negative. If this is the case, I would suggest you see the postings on this website (www.richters.com) entitled, "Hair Loss in Ears" and "Dog and Allergies". Again assuming your puppy’s cough is not kennel cough or anything serious, you could try adding some marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis) tea to her food. Marshmallow root should be available at any good health food shop. In a small saucepan, take two teaspoons Marshmallow root and add one cup of water. Bring to a boil and simmer for 15 minutes. Let cool to lukewarm and add one tablespoon to your dog’s food twice a day. The tea will last in the fridge for about three days before it starts to ferment at which time it should be thrown out.
