I have a black lab who is pregnant. We go on lots of walks in the hills and in fields and I have heard that there is a plant/herb that can cause your dog to have a miscarriage so I was wondering if you could tell me what it is so that we can avoid it.

There are quite a number of plants to avoid whilst pregnant, but the caution would apply to eating the plants, not touching them or walking by. The following plants are a not inexaustible list of those to avoid consuming whilst your dog is pregnant or lactating: Bearberry, herbs containing berberine (Goldenseal, Oregon Grape, etc), Blue Cohosh, Boneset, Bugleweed, Cascara, Catnep, Chamomile, Chaparral, Corn Silk, Eucalyptus, Eyebright, Feverfew, Gingko, Juniper, Lemon Balm, Liquorice, Lobelia, Meadowsweet, Mints, Nutmeg, Oak, Parsley seed, Pennyroyal, Pineapple Weed, Red Clover, Saw Palmetto, Senna, Skullcap, Turkey Rhubarb, Valerian, Walnut, Wild cherry, Wild Yam, Wormwood, Yarrow, Yellow Dock, Yucca. Many of these would not normally be given to animals anyway and I suspect many are not even found in your area. If in doubt, always consult a qualified practitioner who has experience working with both animals and herbs.
