Urine Acidity in Dogs
Answered by: Kerry Hackett
Question from Kelly

My male dog of 3 years has just had a n urostomy performed as he had bladder stones & one got caught in his urethra shaft. His vet has told me that his condition is hereditary & that I need to reduce the acidity & crystals in his urine and make his urine more alkaline. Are there any herbs that you recommend to put in his food to lower acidity & prevent further bladder stones from forming?

Please see the postings on this website (www.richters.com) entitled, "Canine Bladder Stones", "Dachsund with Possible Bladder Stones" and "Terrier and Bladder Stones". Generally, foods like meat tend to increase acidity whilst vegetables tend to make the body more alkaline. You will find recipes and further information in the books mentioned in these postings. In addition, there is a product on the market called Biotic pH+ made by Wysong that has been formulated to prevent the reoccurrence of oxalate, urate or cystine stones and maintain an alkaline urine.
