Various Animals with Fleas and Mites

I am having quite a problem with fleas and mites on my animals. I have 3 dogs, 2 cats, 3 horses and 3 goats. One of my dogs seems to have a constant case of ear mites, and one of my goats also seems to have a constant problem with mites on his skin. Today I noticed some tiny black spots on my white filly’s chest (between her front legs), when I brushed off the spots I noticed that she was bleeding at the point of every little spot. I assume the "spots" I saw were fleas as I later noticed several similar "spots" crawling deeper into her fur. I immediately sprayed the open wounds with mitactin spray and dusted her with diatomacious earth. I have used both products on my goats and have noticed a great reduction in skin redness and itching. I have been repeatedly cleaning my dog’s ears with the mitactin spray and have noticed a reduction in the amount of mite dirt I’m seeing when cleaning her ears.

When I was a child we fed our dog brewers yeast and garlic powder to keep away fleas. I was wondering if I could do the same for all of my animals?

Lots of postings on this website (www.richters.com) regarding fleas and mites! Please see the following: "Animals and Fleas", "Cats, Fleas and Pennyroyal Oil", "Dog and Ear Mites", "Flea Repellent", "Fleas and Lemon Juice", "Fleas on Dog and in the House", "Garden Herbs to Help with Fleas", "Garlic to Repel Biting Flies on Horses" and "Pennyroyal, Dogs and Fleas".

The jury is out as far as the brewer’s yeast and garlic treatment’s efficacy in preventing flea and parasite attacks. I have read some experts swear by it and others say it does not work. It may be, as in everything else, that one treatment works for one animal (or human) and does not owrk for another as we are all individuals. It may also be that your animals are dealing with lice or some parasite other than fleas; it would be worth checking this out before you begin further treatment
