Herbs for a Sunny, Dry Location

I have a very large spot I would like to plant herbs. The problem is it gets full sun all day, and is very dry. What types of herb plants would you suggest I plant. (I live B.C. on Vancouver Island, West Coast) so the winters are cold but not harsh. Also what is the best type of soil for herbs?

Full sun and dry conditions are actually ideal for many herbs. Many of the popular herbs are from the Mediterranean where these conditions are typical. Rosemary, thyme, sage, savory, oregano and many others should do well for you. These same herbs do best in well-drained soil that is not overly rich. Sandy soil with additions of organic matter works well but herbs are happy in most soils except heavy clay, wet or acidic soils.

Not all herbs like dry sunny locations, of course. Some herbs such as watercress need moist or wet conditions. John Stevens’ book, "Gardening With Herbs" has suggestions on what herbs will grow in different conditions.
