Compatibility of Herbs in the Same Pot

I’m preparing to plant my indoor herb garden. All the plants will be in one large pot but in their own individual containers within that pot. I plan on having Genovese basil, chives, Greek oregano, French thyme, sage, marjoram, rosemary, summer savory, Vietnamese coriander, French sorrel and my 12" bay laurel. Are any of these plants incompatible?

Since you will not be taking them out of their pots, this will not be a problem even with more invasive plants than you are planning to grow. What you may have problems with is the space you allot to each plant. The plants should be 15 centimeters (6 inches) to 30 cm (12") apart and with all the plants you plan to put into one pot, I think you may have to increase the number of pots used. The summer savory will get very sprawling and will look best if allowed to drape over the side. The basil will probably start to sprawl in this environment too and again should be put close to the edge of the pot. The chives should be left out of doors until they have been frozen for about a month, then they can be added to the planter. Put an empty pot in its place to hold the space and avoid disturbing the arrangement when the plant comes back in. Trim the plants to have them keep to their allotted spaces-and of course use the trimmings! Make sure you put plants in sufficiently large individual pots to provide the roots with enough food to grow lots of trimmings for you to use.
