Hello my name is Lela Alexandra and I am interested in herbs and many other plants. Someday I am going to learn how to grow as many herbs as I wish and use them as much as I can. I like the idea of growing all of my own food and preparing many wonderful dishes myself. I’m about to buy some. I really find this subject very interesting. Since I’m a beginner can you tell me which ones I should start out with and the basics of when to plant, how to take care of them and when to pick and how, or any thing else. My dad has already grown some basil apurple colored one too. we have naturally growing dill and chives. Whats neat is now we make our own pesto sauce and when our own basil starts getting big enough we can use the purple ones too . We’ll if your interested in giving me some tips write me back, if not I don’t mind my will is strong and I will find my answers some where, some time!

You appear to be interested in culinary herbs. There is a very nice chart, "Common Culinary Herbs and Their Uses", in the Richters InfoSheets section of our website. Please go to:

http://www.richters.com/show.cgi?page=InfoSheets/d9006.html

Most of the herbs in the chart are easy to grow. However they are started in different ways. For example, some are started from seeds indoors and then are transplanted outdoors after the threat of frost is past. Others are started from seeds sown directly in the garden in spring. Others must be purchased as plants because seeds are not available. Garlic is started from cloves separated from bulbs. If you are purchasing plants, then most can be purchased in spring and planted in the garden after the frosts are over.
