Growing Laurus nobilis From Basal Shoots

We have three lovely trees about 5 foot tall and very healthy looking. The trees are developing an abundance of new shoots at the base of the plant which also look very healthy. We want to take these shoots and re-pot them to grow more trees. what is the correct procedure?

These shoots will not have any roots since they come from the parent plant. Cut the shoots off, dip them into rooting hormone (be sure it is fresh, since it deteriorates fairly rapidly), stick into sterilized sand, moisten with sterilized (boiled) water, cover with plastic (new) and put into a bright spot out of direct sunlight. Bottom heat would help. Doing it in very early spring is also more likely to bring success. Keep moist but not sopping wet and cross your fingers! Growing it from seed is easier.
