I live in the Modesto, California, USA area. I respectfully request to learn what herbs would be best to grow in this area? In addition, what herbs would be best to start learning to use?

If you look on our web-site at www.richters.com under "Richters InfoCentre", click on "Plant Hardiness Zone Maps" and check on the North American Map what zone your home is in. Then in our catalogue to the right of the Latin name of each plant is a code for the range of zones each plant can be grown in, out of doors. Pick plants that include your home zone number in their growing range. California has climates ranging from zone 6 to zone 10 and you should be able to guess the zone of your home fairly accurately. If you do not have a catalogue, you can also find the zone range for each plant in the same area of our web-page, but instead of "Plant Hardiness Zone Maps" click on "Richters Herb Growing InfoBase" and either scroll through the herbs by typing in "A" then click on "search" or type in the name of one you are interested in and see if it survives in your zone.

To start with I would recommend you get familiar with the common culinary herbs such as basil, lemon balm, bay laurel, chives and garlic chives, English lavender, lovage, Greek oregano, rosemary, sage, winter savory, garden sorrel, French tarragon, and English thyme.
