Growing Cabbage

I grew some cabbage in the summer, and did not think that they were going to prosper. So I left them in the garden and forgot about them, but they stayed green. Now that winter is here they decided to start growing. What do I need to do?

Cabbages are heavy feeders and are also biennials. You should have kept them well watered and fed during the summer. They tend to make rapid growth in the fall and are not fazed by light frosts. Since we are now in early December and 2008 seems to have an early winter, I do not think they will continue growing. If there is a bit of a head it might be worthwhile to harvest them anyway. The frost will have improved the taste significantly and you will enjoy them, even if it not a big feast!
