Aromatic herbs

What are the earliest (Spring) growing/blooming herbs. My backyard faces west, but is shaded on the south side with two trees. We get sun on the north side for maybe five hours a day. What I would like are herbs that will just make the garden smell fabulous when you walk by. I have had no luck with lavender.

You did not mention the size of your garden and judging by your description of the amount of sun you get I can see that lavender will not be suitable. My suggestion would be to plant some large pots with fragrant herbs in locations where you spend the most time. Nothing much grows well under trees except for lily-of the-valley which is a fragrant spring flower. Herbs like rosemary, sage, and yes, lavender grow well in pots. The pots can be brought in for the winter months. The lemon scented thymes have a fresh smell when walked on, but they are sun loving plants.
