Dog and Indigestion Answered by: Kerry Hackett Question from: Elizabeth Posted on: June 13, 2006
My golden retriever has to be on a mix of special vet food and another commercial brand because she tends to belch and has lots of gas. Is there anything I can do instead?
Yes, often animals tend to have indigestion from commercial foods. Given their bodies were designed to kill and eat prey animals, their digestive systems have evolved to metabolise raw foods, not those manufactured in a commercial production process. The first thing you might want to do is look at the work of Richard Pitcairn, "Natural Health for Dogs and Cats", "The Complete Herbal Handbook for the Dog and Cat" by Juliette de Bairacli Levy and "The Barf Diet" by Ian Billinghurst. Here you will find further information on this subject as well as recipes for good, homemade diets. The change in food (introduced gradually over a two week period) should look after most of your dog’s digestive complaints.
