| | | Cat with FIV Answered by: Kerry Hackett Question from: Cesia Gladys Posted on: June 14, 2006
I would like to build up the immune systems of both my cat and her offspring. Both have been spayed. Is there any thing I can give them so that they do not have discharge from their nose?
I assume from the subject of your email that both cats have FIV which is the feline version of HIV. This condition once acquired lives in the body often dormant until the immune system becomes depressed for some reason (illness, stress, vaccinations, etc.). This is a very serious illness and one that requires ongoing work with a qualified practitioner who works with both animals and herbal medicine. In the meantime, a good homemade diet should help to strengthen a weakened body. Please see the work of Richard Pitcairn, "Natural Health for Dogs and Cats", "The Complete Herbal Handbook for the Dog and Cat" by Juliette de Bairacli Levy and "The Barf Diet" by Ian Billinghurst for ideas regarding foods and recipes. Herbs that may also prove useful are those which build up the immune system on a deep level like Astragulus membranaceous and Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum). Do not use Echinacea as there is some evidence that this herb can make the condition worse.
