Milk Thistle and Liver Conditions

I’ve been reading mixed information on doses and forms of milk thistle. I have a 7-1/2 lb dog and want to know the dose to give him and in what form. I don’t know whether to buy this at a human’s vitamin store or try to buy it on line (which has been unsuccessful so far). Any and all information would be appreciated.

The best supplier of milk thistle seed would be a reputable herb supplier like Richters or a qualified herbal practitioner in your area. Dosing is difficult to say without knowing more about your dog and his history. Assuming he is not on any pharmaceuticals at all, he could try the following: put 20 drops of milk thistle tincture (Carduus marianus) in 2 tablespoons boiling water. Let sit, uncovered for 10 minutes. Give one dropper of this dilute liquid in food twice a day. Given the complex nature of your dog’s condition, I would recommend that you seek out the recommendations of a qualified practitioner who is experienced in animals and herbs. Please see the website of the Veterinary Botanical Medicine Association (www.vbma.org) for a practitioner in your area.
