| | | Australian Shepherd and High Urinary pH Answered by: Kerry Hackett Question from: Jan Joice Posted on: February 26, 2007
My 1 yr old Australian Shepherd has a urine pH of 7.5...high alkaline. What can I give her to make the urine more acidic? She is constantly irritated and cannot hold her bladder..has accidents frequently. No sign of infections.
Generally, an increase in protein will add to the acidity of the urine, especially as found in a good, homemade diet. You may want to look at the work of Richard Pitcairn, "Natural Health for Dogs and Cats", "The Complete Herbal Handbook for the Dog and Cat" by Juliette de Bairacli Levy and "The Barf Diet" by Ian Billinghurst for further information on this topic as well as recipes. However, there may be more going on than just the pH of her urine. I would recommend that you and she seek a consultation with a qualified practitioner who has experience in the use of herbs in animals. Such a person may be found through the Veterinary Botanical Medicine Association (www.vbma.org).
