Grain Amaranth Harvesting Answered by: Conrad Richter Question from: J Moelker Posted on: September 11, 1998
I have ordered and grown grain amaranth. I love its color, but have no idea how to harvest it. please, please tell me before its too late!
Tiny seeds will form in the flowerheads after the flower is spent. You should see hard black or brown seeds about a millimetre in diameter. When these have formed you can simply shake them into a box or bag. You then dry them in the sun for several days to remove any moisture. Then separate out dirt, dust and twigs using sifts of various sizes. (It may be that the seeds are clean enough so you don’t need to sift.) Store the seeds in an airtight container, away from strong light and heat.
