| | | Horehound Candy Recipe Answered by: Conrad Richter Question from: Dale Eveland Posted on: October 26, 2008
As a kid I loved the old fashioned horehound candy... you know the long twisted hard candy. I’ve tried several ‘modern’ horehound drops and they just didn’t have the flavour I remembered.
After searching the web for recipes and suppliers of horehound, I discovered your site.
What luck!
I ordered a package of dried and sifted horehound and a packet of seeds last week. They arrived yesterday and I brewed up some horehound tea and made a batch of horehound candy. It was so good I thought I would share the recipe with you.
Thank you for the prompt service. I’m looking forward to planting the seeds next spring.
----------
HOREHOUND CANDY
Brew horehound tea:
Add 1 heaping tablespoon of dried, cut and sifted Richters horehound herb to 1 cup of boiling water.
Steep for 1/2 hour and strain, using a coffee filter sieve combination, into a heavy saucepan. Press retained liquid from the horehound with a spoon to maximize flavour.
Add:
2 cups of packed granulated brown sugar
1/2 cup dark corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon butter
1/8 teaspoon salt
Cook to 300 degrees (hard crack stage) on the candy thermometer.
Pour on buttered or "release" tin foiled cookie sheet.
Score surface deeply (a buttered cleaver or pizza cutter works well) to form squares as candy cools.
This may require several passes to maintain the grid as the candy is still somewhat fluid.
Break candy into pieces after the candy hardens.
Thank you so much for sharing this with us, and with our website visitors. Please are so pleased that we were able to help you to relive a childhood memory!
