Dong Quai Culture Answered by: Inge Poot Question from: Shahna Lax Posted on: June 16, 1998
I have had wonderful success germinating the dong quai seeds I received from you this spring. I am now anxious to find out what the cultural requirements are to bring the seedlings to maturity. I live in Crestone, Colorado at 8000 feet above sea level in a high desert. In very protected areas of the garden, we can consider ourselves zone six. Common angelica does quite well as a perennial with little water.
Dong quai is hardy in zones five to nine and should do fine for you in your zone six microclimate. It likes the same treatment as the common angelica : well-drained, moist, rich soil in sun to half shade. However in your climate the plants would be better off in a shadier spot only to avoid drying out.
