Ginger Culture Answered by: Inge Poot Question from: Hugh Robertson Posted on: June 16, 1999
Could you please advise us on how to plant the ginger plant (zingiber officinale) which we bought recently from you. We are unsure of location, soil type, watering, etc. Would you also tell us when the root is ready to be harvested.
The ginger should be planted like a bearded iris: The rhizome top should be just at the surface. Choose a well-draining, rich soil as your planting medium. The plants will be ready to harvest in the fall after the foliage has died down. Do not allow the plants to freeze. In temperate climates this means the plant would be best planted in a large pot and the pot moved to a sunny window before the first fall frost. Harvest the old part of the root and replant the growing tip.
