Ginger Origins Answered by: Inge Poot Question from: Sean Mcmullen Posted on: June 25, 1999
I am wanting to purchase ginger and am concerned of the kind of ginger I would grow. I do not want to get a root at the grocery store, in case it is a kind from an equatorial area.
I live in Peterborough County here in south-eastern Ontario. Do you have any information on the ginger you sell?
I’m interested in the varieties listed as P2862 and P2862-300 in Richters’ catalogue.
Zingiber officinale comes from zones 9 to 11 and is therefore subtropical, but would not be winter hardy planted out of doors in your zone 4 to 5 area.
Asarum canadense on the other hand is perfectly hardy in that zone. It is rated hardy in zones 3 to 8.
