Solomon’s Seal Identification Answered by: Inge Poot Question from: Name not given Posted on: November 25, 1999
How can you tell true Solomon’s seal from false Solomon’s seal?
Both have thickened creeping rhizomes (underground stems), alternate leaves with tapering leaf bases. To avoid confusion with similar species, note that the leaves do NOT look like up-side-down hearts and the leaf bases do not clasp the stem.
The bell-shaped flowers of Solomon’s seal come usually in pairs from the leaf nodes along the stem, while the cup-shaped flowers of false Solomon’s seal come from a multiflowered inflorescence emerging from the top of the plant.
