Watercress Culture Answered by: Inge Poot Question from: Marg Short Posted on: April 9, 2000
I have a packet of watercress (Nasturtium officinale) S2020 that I had planned on starting indoors to transplant outdoors later but when reading the planting directions on the back they seemed to be general directions for all herbs and I feel as this is a water loving plant would I treat it differently?
For seeding this plant, it needs identical treatment to most other seedlings. It must never dry out, but this is true of most other seedlings. When the plant is mature, it gets a severe set back if it is allowed to dry out. In other words you continue watering it as if it were a seedling all of its life. It can tolerate partial submersion, but does not need it for good growth. It will need more light as a mature plant, but in that respect it is similar to most other herbs as well.
