Winter Care For Lavender in Upstate New York Answered by: Inge Poot Question from: MaryElizabeth Metcalf Posted on: October 11, 2006
I live in Upstate New York, and we are expecting our first frost tomorrow! This past spring I received, from your nursery, 6 Grosso Lavender plants. They have done very well in my garden thus far, but I have a terrible track record when it comes to protecting them over a winter. Help, what should I do now to protect them so that they all survive a NY winter?
Pop a sufficiently large pot with a hole in the bottom upside down over the plant, then cover the pot with mulch. The pot will keep the plant dry over the winter and the mulch will even out the temperature fluctuations. Grosso lavender is hardy to zone 5 and should therefore have no problem with your lowest winter temperatures. Remove the mulch as soon as the snow has melted in the spring and the pot about a week later.
