I want to grow annual poppy flowers in Arizona, USA (Yuma area). Please let me know but is the best time to plant the seeds in soil and is the best method to plant seeds?
Annual poppies transplant very poorly and you should therefore stick to seeds. All the species we offer need frost to germinate. Since I am not sure if you have any frost in your area, I would suggest that you mix the seed with damp sand in a clean plastic bag, leave at room temperature for 2 to 3 days, then put in the fridge for 2-3 days, then move to the freezer for a week, put in the fridge for 2-3 days, then back in the freezer for a week, then in the fridge for a week and then surface sow outside, cover with a few sprinkles of sand, water in. Keep moist and if it is hot already then shade the seedbed with some tree branches- evergreens are best- to prevent too rapid drying.
