I was wondering if you could recommend fragrant flowering plants that do well in containers outdoors? I’m in Montreal, so specifically I’d be looking for plants that flower in their first year, as I imagine that few things would be hardy enough to overwinter in my zone. I’ve tried lavender to no avail, for example.

All the scented geraniums are very fragrant and flower through most the summer. They are suitable for container gardening since they are drought tolerant. There are some other lovely fragrant flowers, sweet pink has a beautiful smell and is covered with white, pale or deep pink flowers most of the summer. The Spanish Eyes lavender blooms the first summer and is a continuous bloomer (S3634-500) and grows quickly from seeds. Spanish lavender (P3638) has light lilac flowers and is a fast grower and blooms through the summer. You might be familiar with the heliotrope, nice compact plant with very fragrant deep purple flowers. The Autumn sages are excellent container herbs, Ever blooming, drought tolerant and come in different colours. I hope this will give you some ideas.
